There is one big forecast factor

The forecast released Sunday by Atmospheric G2 and The Weather Company has the fingerprints of an intensifying El Niño all over it.

This potential historic El Niño could be similar to those in 1997 and 2015, if not stronger, according to Todd Crawford, Vice President of Meteorology at Atmospheric G2 and chief author of the outlook.

"This typically means less hot summers," wrote Crawford.

You can see this imprinted on the three-month forecast with a large chunk of the country expected to see just slightly above average, or relatively mild, conditions.

Aside from El Niño, Crawford also noted the historically warm water in the Pacific Ocean near Mexico's Baja Peninsula and Southern California.

"This will add extra water vapor and enhance rainfall amounts during the monsoon in the Southwest U.S.," Crawford wrote.
