Trees, green roofs and walls are knocking degrees off the summer heat, if you use the right green tool for the job.

Nature's AC: how cities are growing cooler streets

In a summer of heat records, what if the answer to keeping buildings cooler was growing all around us? 

At three schools in Spain and Portugal, the classrooms stayed comfortable during a September heat wave. No new air conditioners were added — just plants. 

Researchers with the EU's LIFE - my building is green project wrapped the buildings in green roofs, living façades and shaded pergolas. They customized 19 nature-based fixes across about 3.4 acres.

The payoff was quite impressive. Indoor temperatures fell 7 to nearly 11 degrees Fahrenheit, staying below about 81 degrees even at the peak. Sun-baked walls cooled by more than 35 degrees. Cooling electricity use dropped over 11%.

It's a small pilot, but it points to a hopeful idea: giving cities the power to lower their own temperatures, if they pick the right green tool for the right job. 

For the block, plant trees. Shade trees are the workhorses of city cooling. They block sunlight and "sweat" through their leaves, dropping the surrounding air temperature by several degrees and trimming nearby buildings' AC use by as much as 30%. A sweeping study of 9,000 cities found trees can erase about half of the urban "heat island" (when concrete and asphalt bake a city hotter than the countryside around it).

For the building, go up top. Green roofs and living walls are often oversold as street-coolers; at sidewalk level, a green roof might shave less than a degree off the air. But for the building underneath? A layer of living insulation that can slash a structure's cooling load. Think of trees as neighborhood AC and green roofs as building AC.

In March, the World Resources Institute launched Cool Cities Lab, a free tool that lets planners estimate how much cooling they'd get from trees or cool roofs before they plant a single seedling.

Even though greenery is a powerful patch, it’s not a cure. It takes the edge off urban heat, but it won't cancel the climate-driven heat waves arriving earlier and hotter each year.

Still, in a summer of records, the right greenery in the right place can knock real degrees off a hot day, trim power bills and ease the strain on a stressed grid.
