When severe weather is approaching, most people's first instinct is to plan how to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. But one man listened to the concerns of his worried wife and didn't hesitate to run straight into the storm to help save a litter of baby bunnies in danger.

The dramatic rescue was captured on video by his wife, who filmed from inside their home. As heavy rain poured down and floodwaters started to rise, her husband could be seen crouched at ground level searching for the animals. Eventually, the man found the shallow nest, saving the baby bunnies who would have otherwise drowned in the couple's neighbor's yard.

By the end of the video, all four baby bunnies are safely out of the storm, nestled in a red blanket, with onscreen text that reads "this is my why."

The tiny rabbits were especially vulnerable to the elements because they are newborns and still mostly hairless. Mother rabbits often return to a nest several times a day to feed their babies, but the litter is frequently left unprotected from potential dangers for the first few weeks.

Viewers couldn't help but praise the dramatic rescue, with many commenting on the man's compassion and willingness to help animals in need. Some jokingly told his wife that she should "marry him again," and nicknamed him a "walking green flag." Others simply thanked the man for putting himself in harm's way to save the helpless animals.

How to Help Animals Displaced by a Storm

Severe weather can put pets and wildlife in dangerous situations quickly. Donating, volunteering, and supporting relief efforts with organizations like the Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA can help save wildlife and pets when disaster strikes.

On a more personal level, professionals suggest people can safely help animals affected by extreme weather in the following ways:

  • Check for immediate danger. Animals trapped by rising water, fallen trees, or storm debris may need help, but avoid helping until any threat to human life has passed.
  • Contact wildlife rehabilitators. Baby animals that appear abandoned, sick, or injured require specialized care and should be evaluated by trained professionals whenever possible. A list of wildlife rescue and rehabilitators by state can be found here: Find Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitators by State
  • Keep pets indoors during storms. Loud noises, flooding, and debris caused by strong winds can be scary and disorienting for pets. This can lead to panic or lost animals.
  • Provide temporary shelter for displaced animals. Providing a secure, dry, and safe space for a lost or distressed animal until conditions improve can make a big difference in the outcome.
  • Avoid relocating healthy wildlife if possible. Once a storm has passed, many adult wild animals are capable of returning to their normal location and routines as long as they are not sick or injured.

For the baby bunnies seen in the video, the floodwaters surrounding their shallow nest could have been potentially deadly. Thanks to one man's compassion and quick thinking, the tiny litter made it through the dangerous situation. According to two follow-up videos, the TikTok user @bchimkawaii shared that the mother rabbit has returned and the little bunnies are thriving.
