Anyone who has ever picked a freshly grown tomato from their outdoor plant knows the joy of growing your own produce. There's just something about the sun-warmed tomatoes that makes all the months of taking care of your plants feel worthwhile.

But, before you get to that point, many gardeners have to deal with some of the less enjoyable parts of gardening, like battling tomato hornworms and trellis troubles. While I can't offer any insight into that first issue, a TikToker has just shared a brilliant hack for reinforcing your tomato cages, which can help your tomatoes stay upright as they begin to produce more during the growing season.

The Simple Swap That Changes Everything

If you're looking for a way to help your tomatoes get off to a great start this summer, @lirio_keyla has a great hack for you. Instead of using your tomato trellis the way you typically would (by putting the pointy feet into the ground), she suggests flipping that idea on its head.

In her recent video, she shows her followers how she turns her trellises upside down, putting the wide base on the dirt, leaving the pointy feet of the cage pointing up towards the sky. Then, she uses bamboo stakes to reinforce the legs of the cage, which also elongates the trellis, giving your plant more support as it grows.

Why Gardeners Can't Stop Talking About It

Her followers were quick to celebrate the ingenious swap, and they rushed to the comments to tell her what a great idea it was. "Oh you're my new best friend," one person joked.

"You are blowing my mind," another person added.

While this trick is a pretty great one, it's also an easy one to do on a budget if you already have the supplies. While Lirio had to go out and get some bamboo stakes to pull this off at home, if you already have access to tall and sturdy sticks, you can do this with just about anything you find in the yard.

You Don't Need Cages to Grow Tomatoes

While tomato cages have long been seen as an essential gardening tool, people swear by other methods too.

For example, some people like to bury their tomatoes lengthwise in the garden, giving them a much more robust underground root system so that they don't need the support from a cage.

Meanwhile, others like to use strings and sticks to grow their tomatoes, creating a more natural trellis system that runs on either side of the tomatoes like walls, allowing you to add new layers as your tomatoes get taller (this is especially important with indeterminate varieties).

That being said, there's really no wrong way to stake your plants as long as they are getting the support they need, and as long as you have access to some different materials (and you're feeling creative), you can turn just about anything into the perfect support system for your tomato garden.
