Dogs in shelters spend lots of time alone in their kennels just longing for human touch. Animal care staff members and volunteers do the best they can with tending to each lonely canine, but sadly, they are outnumbered by these dogs in need.

Shortbread is a sweet dog currently at the Maui Humane Society. The precious pooch recently had an interaction with a staff member and showed tender appreciation for a loving gesture.

In the TikTok from @cassondrachristman, Shortbread was resting on a blanket as a staff member walked into his kennel. When she brought him a more comfortable dog bed to sleep on, he immediately started wagging his tail at the mere sight of a loving human being.

She gave Shortbread some gentle belly rubs, causing his eyes to close in relaxation. The canine cutie literally smiled with gratitude at her gentle touch.

"Turns out he didn't want the bed," the on-screen text shared. "He just wanted someone to love on him."

The tender-hearted fur baby is approximately 5 years old and still waiting for a forever home.

"It’s hard to believe Shortbread's [parent] never came for him and also that he’s been there 10 days with no adoption interest?" the caption noted. "He’s like 20 pounds. Small. Sweet and shy. I am hoping we can find him a home this weekend."

How to Help a Shy Shelter Dog Come Out of His Shell

Most dogs are fearful when they are initially brought home from a shelter. Their past trauma and abrupt transition of environment causes canines great amounts of stress and anxiety. Patience and compassion go a long way with helping these fur babies overcome their fears.

Some tips to keep in mind when you first bring home your shelter dog include:

• Keep the house very quiet for the first few days, and avoid sudden loud noises.
• Limit introductions to visitors and other animals in your home until your dog is more settled.
• Give your dog their own "safe space" to decompress with their food and water close by.
• Avoid direct eye contact early on — use soft, sideways glances, which feel much less intimidating to a fearful dog.
• Don't force interaction or affection — give your dog plenty of space until they are ready to approach you.
• Use positive reinforcement through praise and treats.

Give your new shelter dog plenty of time and follow their cues. These canines need lots of love and understanding and will let their guard down in their own time.

Hopefully, someone will soon open their heart to Shortbread and give him the forever home he deserves with unlimited love and affection.
