Here's what pollution, the jet stream and a little confirmation bias have to do with your washed-out Saturday plans.

A rainy weekend can really put a damper on our lives, but does it really rain more on the weekends?

The science is a bit mixed.

Does it actually rain more on the weekends?

It depends on who you ask, and when. You and I know that some places just get stuck in wet weekend patterns for what feels like forever.

While 2026 seems to have bucked the trend, 2023-2025 featured a long list of consecutive wet weekends in the Northeast. Twenty-five weekends in a row. Twelve weekends in a row.


We cannot ignore that people are often paying more attention to the weather on the weekend than during the week when we're cooped up working inside. So a rainy day at the office, while notable, isn't as annoying as a rainy Saturday when we want to be outside.

Even among scientists, this is up for debate. Dubbed the "weekend effect," the answer may depend on your location.

A NASA study using satellite data and rainfall observations suggests that rainfall coverage and intensity increases over the Southeast midweek, driven by rising pollution levels. Aerosols from our Monday-through-Friday commutes and industrial activities provide surfaces for moisture to collect on, and that buildup translates into rain.

Changes in rainfall intensity are less amplified in the West, likely driven by less pollution and less population in the western states.

Tropical cyclones near the East Coast may also be more muted on the weekends.

Natural patterns: The weather drivers

Repeating weather isn't entirely our imagination and that is often because of the jet stream.

The jet stream is a narrow ribbon of strong winds that encircles the globe about 30,000 feet above the ground. It's like a river in the sky.

This ribbon oscillates northward and southward, affecting weather in each of these turns.

When the jet stream dives southward, meteorologists call it a trough. Troughs bring wetter, cooler weather. There are often 4-7 of these dips in the jet stream location in either hemisphere.

The likelihood of that dip in the jet stream landing on a weekend—or any other day—and whether it happens once a week or more often depends on just how wavy the jet stream is.

They tend to arrive in regular intervals until something disrupts this pattern and a new pattern is created.

Dips in the jet stream tend to arrive once a week, but they could bring rainier weather every day if it sits overhead.

Ways the weather can repeat itself

There are some other smaller-scale weather features that repeat, too.

  • Cold fronts - This is the most likely weather to come roughly once a week. Outside of the summer, many communities will often go through a cycle that roughly goes stormy, cold, slow warm up, a little humid and back to stormy. For anywhere between a couple of weeks to two months, you can almost know the day of the week based on the weather. Friday will be rainy, while Wednesday is the day to get outside in the warmer air.
  • Thunderstorm complexes - If you're in the Plains, Midwest or South, you know there's a time in the spring and summer months when thunderstorms come through at about the same time of the day for a week or two. This is because thunderstorms will have their beginnings in the Plains at roughly peak afternoon heating, then move eastward at roughly the same speed until they either die out or move off the East Coast or into the Gulf.
  • Tropical disturbances - In the deep tropics, you may also notice that it gets cloudier or rainier every few days, and there's a jet stream involved here too. The African easterly jet stream amplifies disturbances called tropical waves that leave Africa every few days to cross the Atlantic and Caribbean. Some of these waves become hurricanes.
  • Sea breeze storms - In Florida and many other coastal locations, you can often set your clock by the afternoon thunderstorms. The difference in temperature between the ocean and the land creates a localized wind that creates thunderstorms. If the temperatures of the land don't change from one afternoon to the next, you'll end up with rain at about the same time each afternoon.
