Extreme temperatures stress even a healthy yard. Five steps to keep your landscape thriving, from watering to mulch.

How to protect your garden while this heat wave is still going

The whole appeal of hiring a gardener is that the yard stops being your problem. And most weeks, that's exactly how it works. A heat wave, however, is not most weeks. A standard bi-weekly contract almost never accounts for the day it hits triple digits, and the stakes are higher than they look: cooperative extension experts say a plant's water needs can basically double when temperatures spike and transpiration (fancy word for plant sweat) kicks into overdrive.

Picture your version of the week ahead. Maybe you've got a crew that rolls up every other Tuesday and you've never once wondered what they do when the forecast turns brutal. Maybe you are the crew, out with a hose before work. Maybe your "yard" is a row of pots on a balcony that turns into a convection oven by noon. The heat doesn't care which one you are, and the fixes barely change.

So before the next one rolls in, pull up the forecast and heat alerts for your area on weather.com or in The Weather Channel app. Then, whether you're briefing a pro or briefing yourself, run through these five moves.

1. Water deep, not shallow

The move: Longer, deeper, less frequent soaks, especially for anything you planted this season.

Why it works: A slow, deep soak trains roots to chase the cool, damp soil down instead of loitering near the surface where water burns off fast. North Carolina's extension agents put a number on it: one deep soak two or three times a week beats a daily sprinkle every time.

2. Lay down a blanket of mulch

The move: If it hasn't been done lately, add a fresh 2 to 3 inch layer around trees, shrubs, and beds. Keep it pulled back an inch or two from stems and trunks.

Why it works: Mulch is a comforter for the soil. It traps moisture and steadies the ground temperature, which spares roots from the worst of the sun. Pound for pound, it's one of the highest-return moves in a yard.

3. Put the fertilizer down

The move: Check the service agreement and skip any feeding scheduled right before or during a big heat wave.

Why it works: Fertilizer is a dinner bell for new growth, and a plant white-knuckling its way through extreme heat has nothing to spare. Force it to grow anyway and you can weaken it, or lose it outright.

4. Step away from the pruners

The move: Hold off on big hedge trims, tree pruning, and aggressive weeding until things cool off.

Why it works: Every cut is a wound the plant has to spend energy closing, and pruning strips the leafy canopy shading everything beneath it. University of Minnesota foresters warn that pruning a heat-stressed tree leaves it more open to pests and slower to heal. During a heat wave, leave the canopy be.

5. Set the timer for sunrise

The move: If your gardener runs the irrigation clock, confirm it's watering early, right around sunrise.

Why it works: Midday watering is mostly a present to the atmosphere. A huge share evaporates before it reaches a root. The guidelines don't mince words: in the heat, never water between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

First, find your heat zone (not the one on your seed packets)

Here's the part almost everyone gets backward, and the part I find genuinely fascinating. You likely know your USDA hardiness zone, the number on the back of every seed packet. That map is about one thing: surviving winter. For a heat wave, it's the wrong tool.

The map that matters this week is the AHS Plant Heat-Zone Map, which ranks the country by how many days a year it climbs past 86 degrees Fahrenheit. And 86 isn't arbitrary. It's roughly where plant cells start taking damage and photosynthesis stalls.

That is the entire reason this story exists. A tomato in Phoenix and a tomato in Portland are not having the same summer. Plants in the low heat zones (the northern tier, higher elevations, the Pacific Northwest) may go their whole lives barely brushing 86, so they've built no defenses for it. A heat wave there isn't an inconvenience. It's a shock. Meanwhile, a Zone 10 or 11 yard runs hot for months and shrugs most of it off. Same forecast number, wildly different emergency.

Zones range from 1, fewer than one day a year above 86 degrees, in the cooler North and high elevations, up to 12, more than 210 days above 86 degrees, across the Desert Southwest and Gulf Coast.

A heat wave is always relative to what your plants are used to, so the same hot stretch plays out three ways across the country.

  • Hot-zone yards (South and Southwest): Built for this, but a long run with no overnight cool-down wears down even seasoned plants. Watch new plantings and containers first.
  • Mid-zone yards (the country's broad middle): Where the heat does its sneakiest damage, because these plants are only half-prepared. The five moves above matter most for you.
  • Cool-zone yards (northern tier, higher elevations, the Pacific Northwest): Genuine triage. These plants rarely see 90-plus and have no playbook for it. Shade cloth and deep watering aren't nice-to-haves this week.

One detail our forecasts are built to catch, and the one people miss: with heat, duration beats peak, and the overnight lows decide who recovers. Plants heal at night, just like people. When the lows stay hot, that window never opens, and that's when a yard really goes downhill.

The long game: design the emergency out

Notice how many of these moves are just damage control. If your summer has become an annual rescue operation, that's worth sitting with. You can keep sprinting to the hose every time the forecast turns, or build a yard that doesn't need rescuing.

That's the idea behind xeriscaping: trading thirsty turf for plants built for your conditions instead of fighting them. Denver Water, which coined the term, found that shrinking a lawn can cut outdoor water use by up to 70 percent. And because natives evolved for your local weather, the heat wave that has you out at sunrise is, to them, just another Tuesday. No triage required.
