Red leaves in August is a distress signal, not early fall

Across the rain-soaked East and Upper Midwest, people are already spotting early red maples, a distress signal this early in the year. Over-saturated soil, drought, insects or disease could all be the culprit. It means the tree is actually bailing on its leaves to conserve energy.
