Meet Thelma, a 9.5-year-old mixed breed (25% German shepherd, 12.5% Great Pyrenees, 12.5% chow chow, 12.5% beagle, 12.5% rottweiler, 12.5% Alisha Eskimo dog, 12.5% “other”) that lives in Colorado. Her owner writes, "She’s gifted with warmth and kindness to humans, cats, and most dogs, and is my constant outdoor companion at home in Colorado. Each year, she awaits winter’s return, her long lost friend in all other seasons. We joke that she has a TFR (temporary flight restriction) above her always, spotting raptors soaring on thermals as small as my pinky nail, and giving them what for. From reading your newsletter earlier this week, I wonder if it’s possible that dogs can hear the sound that thunderstorms produce that is too low for human ears, as she is our little meteorologist." (Editor's note: The science on this indicates that dogs indeed can hear these low sounds, allowing them to hear approaching thunderstorms far before we can).
