Mangroves serve as a natural defense to hurricanes, and after years of steady decline, they are showing signs of life.

The biggest comeback story in climate science just happened

When Hurricane Irma tore through Florida in 2017, the state's mangrove forests blocked enough storm surge to prevent an estimated $1.5 billion in flood damage and kept floodwater away from more than half a million people. Counties with healthy mangroves saw damages cut by nearly 25% compared to those without. Globally, mangroves protect more than 15 million people and prevent over $65 billion in property damage every single year, just by being there.

Mangroves are one of the best storm-surge buffers on Earth, and they're a frontline defense for the Gulf Coast and Florida every hurricane season. Studies show that after 40 years of these forests steadily disappearing, they just stopped shrinking. And they are showing signs of growth.

Mangroves show new signs of life

A June 2026 study in Science, led by Tulane researcher Zhen Zhang, used four decades of satellite data to track mangroves worldwide and found that the losses that piled up from the 1980s through 2010 have been almost entirely erased by regrowth over the last 16 years. Net change over 40 years: essentially zero.

"After decades of loss, we're finally seeing a global turning point for mangroves," says co-author Daniel Friess.

A separate, newer analysis from Aberystwyth University's Global Mangrove Watch project found global mangrove cover is actually up nearly 118,000 acres since 1985. That’s roughly the size of New Orleans. 

Both studies point out expansion along the Gulf Coast, including Louisiana's Mississippi River Delta, where mangroves declined through the late 1990s before rebounding sharply after 2012. Texas saw a similar rebound before a 2021 freeze knocked it back. Not only are mangroves one of the most effective natural storm-surge buffers available to Gulf and Florida coastlines, but they store far more carbon per acre than land-based forests, making their expansion a win for both coastal resilience and carbon capture.

Scientists are careful not to call this a full recovery. Regional losses are still happening, and warming oceans remain a long-term threat to some coastlines. But two independent satellite analyses landing on the same conclusion, just weeks apart, show a hopeful sign.
