A Division II game between Colorado School of Mines and Washburn in Topeka, Kansas, was suspended before overtime started. It ended in a rare tie, 16-16, due to extreme heat. When the game was paused, the temperature was 99 degrees with a heat index of 108, which exceeds the conference limit set by the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, as reported by The Athletic.

That game was moved up to a rare 9 a.m. kickoff time in a futile attempt to avoid the worst of the heat.

Hospitalizations in Kentucky, Texas

In Lexington, Kentucky, more than 100 fans reported heat-related issues as temperatures soared into the 90s. WKYT reported that many of those fans were taken to the hospital for treatment.

At the Texas State vs. Texas game in Austin, a Texas State alumnus shared a photo on X (formerly Twitter) showing fans "huddled in the stadium like it's a hurricane shelter," adding that he'd seen paramedics bringing four different stretchers in during the first quarter.

Record-setting heat elsewhere

The fourth quarter of South Carolina's home opener drubbing of Kent State was cut to 10 minutes due to the extreme heat. Temperatures reached 95 in Columbia on Saturday afternoon, and the heat index reached triple digits. The stands at Williams-Brice Stadium emptied early due to the heat and the game's non-competitive nature.

At kickoff for Georgia's home opener against Tennessee State, the temperature was 100 degrees, the hottest game in school history. Arkansas also set a record for hottest temperature at kickoff, 101, according to The Athletic.
