A volcanic island, Anak Krakatau, erupted in Indonesia on Sunday, stranding over 270,000 would-be air passengers as ash drifted across western parts of the country. The continuous, 25-hour eruption that produced a fountain of lava and a boom heard 435 miles away ended Sunday, but it remained active Monday with moderate, intermittent eruptions, dark ash emissions and small, localized earthquakes.
