I have become slightly obsessed with the birds in my backyard. I have a smart feeder that alerts me approximately every two minutes that another grackle has arrived, and apparently I’ve reached the stage of life where this is exciting information that must immediately be shared with my family.

But even my backyard bird situation cannot compete with this woman’s deck. She has two hummingbird feeders hanging above gorgeous potted Mandevilla flowers, and there are so many hummingbirds zooming around that I gave up trying to count them. Twenty? Twenty five? At some point it starts looking less like a porch and more like a tiny airport.

The incredible clip was shared by the TikTok account @mylifenotyourssobye, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen this many hummingbirds together either.

They’re drinking from the feeders, hovering in midair and zipping around one another like somebody opened a hummingbird nightclub and forgot to establish a maximum occupancy.

“I’ve never seen so many hummingbirds in one spot before!” one person commented.

Another viewer said their feeders look similar right now and they’re refilling three times a day.

“Wow, that looks like such a peaceful porch location with a beautiful view,” someone wrote.

Another was ready to recreate the entire setup: “Oh my goodness! This is so cute. I’ve never seen so many in the same place at once. I am stealing your beautiful idea and going to try and recreate this beautiful image in my backyard!”

People also wanted to know what magical hummingbird potion she was serving.

Her recipe?

“One part sugar, four parts water.”

That’s it. And that ratio lines up with Smithsonian guidance: one part refined white sugar to four parts water, with no red dye needed. Feeders also need frequent cleaning and fresh nectar, especially during hot weather.

When Should You Take Hummingbird Feeders Down?

If you’re noticing lots of hummingbird activity as summer winds down, don’t rush to remove your feeders.

Many hummingbirds that breed in the United States migrate south for winter, but leaving a feeder up won’t convince them to cancel their travel plans and move permanently into your begonias. Migration is driven largely by seasonal cues such as changing daylight, not whether your feeder still has food.

Audubon says you can leave feeders up as long as hummingbirds are visiting, and keeping them available can even help late migrating birds passing through. Another Audubon recommendation suggests leaving feeders up for about two weeks after you’ve seen your last hummingbird.

So keep the nectar fresh, keep those feeders clean and enjoy your tiny visitors while they’re around.
