Extreme leaf-peeping: 5 wild ways to see fall foliage this season

Every autumn, the same scene plays out on mountain byways from Vermont to the Ozarks to the Blue Ridge: bumper-to-bumper traffic, packed scenic overlooks and hordes of people all angling for the perfect photo. But fall foliage season doesn't have to mean sitting in a car.

From a balloon basket floating above the trees to a suspension bridge swaying in the canopies, these five experiences put you inside the color change instead of just driving past it.

Soar over Vermont's Champlain Valley in a hot air balloon

In Essex Junction, Vermont, Above Reality flies sunrise and sunset balloon trips over Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks. The roughly hour-long flights give you an incredible vantage point where you really get to see the forest for the trees.

Your best window to catch peak color here is probably during the first two to three weeks of October.

Paddle waterfalls in the Arkansas Ozarks

Kayaking the upper Buffalo National River near Ponca, Arkansas, gives you two payoffs at once: a workout AND a mesmerizing float past limestone bluffs and waterfalls reflecting all of fall's red and gold. The Buffalo Outdoor Center runs trips along this stretch of river, and it doesn't matter if you're a beginner or a seasoned paddler.

Zipline or coaster above the Smokies' changing canopy

If you want to get an adrenaline rush along with foliage, Anakeesta Park in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, sends riders across more than 2,500 feet of side-by-side ziplines above the Smoky Mountain canopy. There's also a mountain coaster if you'd rather stay seated. Either way, you're moving through the treeline instead of just looking at it.

Mid-to-late October through early November is a good bet to see the Smokies' famous mix of yellows, oranges and reds.

Ride a vintage train through a Pennsylvania gorge

Some of the best fall foliage views aren't reachable by roads at all. The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway departs from Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, and carries riders through Lehigh Gorge State Park in vintage coaches, traveling past cliffs and bridges. The open-air cars will make you feel like you're riding straight into the color.

Mid-to-late October is the sweet spot for this route.

Walk among the treetops on a Michigan suspension bridge

At Hidden Lake Gardens in Tipton, Michigan, the "Reach for the Sky" canopy walk lifts you 65 feet above the ground with a boardwalk and suspension bridge — putting you level with the leaves instead of underneath them. If you go during the garden's fall evening tours, you can be there as twilight lights up the canopy.

Mid-to-late October is the peak time here as well.
