Jackie the eagle died of bird flu. Shadow faces a Super El Niño winter

Jackie, the beloved bald eagle at California’s Big Bear Lake, died in August of bird flu, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Wednesday.

"In an uncommon presentation of the virus, the infection caused a severe ulcer in her stomach that led to persistent internal bleeding, anemia, and the development of bacterial sepsis," said Steve Kubiski, the Director of Disease Investigations with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, which performed the necropsy.

Jackie got in a fight with two other eagles in July and was rescued from the lakeshore. Veterinary experts at the Ojai Raptor Center monitored and documented Jackie's ongoing medical care as they attempted to save her, according to CBS News. Even though a blood transfusion gave a brief glimmer of hope, she kept experiencing setbacks from her then-undiagnosed illness. She died almost a month after the fight.

CDFW also said camera data showed no evidence that her partner, Shadow, or their eaglets were sick.

A California icon

Jackie was a famous fixture in Southern California who attracted millions of fans across the United States via a 24/7 livestream. The Friends of Big Bear Valley first installed a camera at Jackie and Shadow's nest, overlooking Big Bear Lake, in 2015. Over the years, the pair successfully raised multiple clutches of eaglets, most recently Sandy and Luna.

"Jackie's story brought unprecedented public attention to bald eagles and the importance of protecting the habitats they depend on," the release from CDFW said. "Her life and the public's connection to her highlights the powerful role that wildlife can play in connecting people to conservation."

Shadow to take on Super El Niño with new mate

Since Jackie's death, Shadow has taken a new, young partner, Kaydee. The untested pair will face the perils of a Super El Niño winter as nesting season arrives in December at an elevation of 7,000 feet.

Winter storms have killed three of Jackie and Shadow's chicks in the past, and this winter's Super El Niño is forecast to pump repeated storms and deep snow into Southern California's mountains. Warm atmospheric rivers are expected to bring the exact cold-rain-then-freeze pattern that's proven deadly here.
