If you’ve ever hosted for the holidays, you’re probably well aware of just how deceptively stressful it can actually be. On the surface, everything might look magical and full of twinkly, glistening wonder, but getting there can be decidedly less glamorous. You’ve got to worry about thousands of minute details, plan menus like a certified chef, gather all the gifts and still find time to actually entertain. It’s a lot of pressure, especially when the standard is Martha Stewart.

Not that you have to go above and beyond, but why not take the extra time to coat cranberries in sugar or make a gingerbread replica of your home just to say you did? ‘Tis the season after all. That said, it’s always easier to set yourself up for success by being proactive about hosting. Whether that means starting your Thanksgiving prep a week early or simply taking time to refresh your home, there are tons of ways to take some of the pressure off. And the good news is there’s still plenty of time to get started.

While it might not make dealing with wacky family members or the inevitable last-minute mishap a complete impossibility, tackling these easy home projects in October at least helps take a few things off your plate later on. If you have a day or two to spare over the next few weeks, you can get your home ready for the holidays in no time. Here are 10 easy weekend projects you can do this month to make your home look like a million bucks before the holidays.

10 Easy Weekend Projects to Do Before the Holidays

Not sure where to start? Here are the 10 home tasks you can start working on now to get your house in tip-top shape come the holiday season.

1. Make room in the freezer.

You might not think to start with your freezer because your guests probably won’t see inside it, but taking time to make space for all the extras that come with hosting can really impact how you experience the holidays. It not only eliminates excess clutter and visual noise in your fridge, but it also gives you a leg up on meal prep once you actually get ready to cook.

According to Jenny Dietsch, founder and CEO of Getting It Done Organizing, you should “clear it out now, then when you cook, double the recipe and freeze the extra for a busy night in December.” Now that’s the kind of smart planning we can get behind.

2. Touch up baseboards and trim.

This one is pretty self-explanatory and definitely not exclusive to the holidays, but why not use holiday hosting as an excuse to touch up your trim? Sure, your guests might not be walking around staring at your baseboards, but scuffs or chipped paint can stand out more than you might think.

All you need to do is go around with a can of paint and a small brush and touch up any spots that could use a refresh. Be warned, though, once you get started, you might not be able to stop.

If you’ve got an empty wall and no idea what to do with it, a gallery wall is the perfect excuse to spend the weekend curating your favorite photos and collected items to be put on display. It’s meant to feel natural and organic, so you can tackle it in one weekend without being overly fussy. And since the idea is that it’ll grow with you over time, no one will notice if it’s not entirely finished by Thanksgiving. It’s the ultimate low-effort weekend project with maximum payoff, and your guests will marvel at how creative you are.

The good news is if you don’t feel like doing it yourself, you can order custom frames online or use this money-saving hack to get the look for less. Marcy Kelman, a DIY book author and set decorator for customframes.com, says, “The biggest theme in 2026 is individuality, which is why custom framing is seeing a resurgence.”

4. Update cabinet hardware.

Although cabinet hardware is pretty much purely utilitarian, that doesn’t mean it can’t also be decorative. It’s ultra-tactile and almost always in your face, so why not use it as an opportunity to really wow your guests?

You can go simple with an updated knob or pull, or go bold and grab a figural statement piece. Laura Townsend, design manager at Magnet, says, “One of the simplest ways to give your kitchen a new lease on life is to update the cabinet handles. Creating a new design aesthetic really is about the finer details that are often overlooked.” She suggests opting for “a more unique handle design that instantly freshens up your kitchen cabinets, bringing in an elevated touch that draws the eye in.”

5. Refresh your bedding.

One of the easiest ways to give your home a facelift before the holidays is to freshen up your bedding and swap lighter summery fabrics for something with a little more weight. Instead of a lighter quilt or duvet, layer a fluffy comforter with throw blankets in varying weights so guests have options. Go bold with colored sheets, or add interest with a pattern. You can even pile on the pillows for a rich, cozy look.

Evelina Juzėnaitė, principal interior designer at Planner 5D, suggests adding “a bedspread, and include an extra throw blanket and pillows; you’ll see how dramatically this transforms the room’s style.”

6. Reposition your paintings or swap out your posters.

Sometimes the best way to refresh your home is to switch things around. If you’re not exactly up for moving furniture, moving artwork and posters around is the next best thing. It’s easy to do in one weekend, and you don’t even have to buy anything.

Placement matters too. “Artwork hung too high or too low throws off the room’s proportions,” Juzėnaitė says, adding that “if you’re tired of the look, simply changing the posters can completely refresh the interior.” All you have to do is move a painting up or down a bit on the wall, or swap a picture for one you already have that’s a bit more festive. You can even find public domain art online and print out your own photos for free.

7. Deep clean and declutter.

If you want a more complete reset before the holidays, it may be worth spending a weekend deep-cleaning and decluttering your space. It will not only make your home feel fresher and more inviting, but it will also take some of the mental weight off so you can focus on the finer details once the holidays are actually here.

The key is to break the cleaning into sections and, if needed, spread it over a few days so you can get it done without feeling overwhelmed.

8. Refresh the guest bathroom.

This is arguably non-negotiable, especially if you plan to have people stay over for the holidays. The guest bathroom is a pretty high-traffic area used by multiple guests, so it’s important that it feels welcoming and clean (emphasis on clean). You might not need to paint the walls or hang wallpaper, but it’s a good idea to reorganize your cabinets and stock up on essentials like toiletries and anything else you think your guests might need, like travel toothpaste or shower products.

“Stack drawers to use the vertical space, add a lazy Susan so tall items are easy to grab and give every category its own bin,” Dietsch says. “Daily essentials up front, backstock in back. Label it so it stays that way.” If you do decide to do something more cosmetic, swapping out the shower curtain or hanging a fun picture takes practically no time.

9. Swap out throw pillows and blankets.

You might already do some version of this, but if not, swapping out your throw pillows and blankets is the ultimate low-effort way to make your home feel a bit more festive for the holidays. You can layer in a few fun shapes, go bold with color or add a few prints.

“While people often focus on changing the color, you can also experiment with textures,” Juzėnaitė says. “Try buying covers in materials like burgundy velvet, chocolate-colored wool, deep green linen or brown bouclé.” If you need a little inspo, Crate & Barrel’s new fall collection is full of seasonally appropriate choices.

10. Decorate your front porch.

Last but certainly not least, the best way to get your home holiday-ready is to decorate your front porch. Think layered florals in ochre and burgundy, a fall-themed wreath and maybe a few strategically placed gourds. You can even use items that transition easily between holidays, like mini faux trees and lights.

Whether you focus on one specific holiday or go for something more seasonal, your front porch sets the tone for how guests feel when they enter your home. Your exterior space is a chance to wow people before they even set foot through the door, so taking some time to stage it for the season or holiday can make a difference.

Final Takeaways

When it comes to getting your home ready for holiday hosting, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to do a complete overhaul. A few strategic swaps, a refresh here and there, and just a day or two on the weekend is all it takes to be prepared to welcome guests into your warm and cozy abode. Happy hosting!
