One very brave coyote is making waves on social media after “harassing” a young Grizzly bear in Yellowstone National Park.

This viral Instagram video shows this coyote having absolutely zero qualms about doing considerably more than poking this bear cub.

According to this video, two coyotes followed this young Grizzly bear early in the morning, and at least one of them was intent on “harassing” him.

This footage shows that rather brave (or foolish, depending on how you look at it) coyote doing their best Blue Heeler imitation, nipping at this bear cub’s paw while his back is turned.

This Grizzly bear cub then looked around to see who was pestering him, but no one was there, and all the bear could do was glance around before continuing on his way.

A caption that plays over this video humorously remarked that this poor Grizzly bear cub’s little pest was “born a coyote” but had the “heart of a wolf.” That’s certainly one way to describe the situation. Another could be that this coyote thinks he has the nine lives of a cat.

Some social media viewers essentially expressed a similar sentiment when they recalled encounters that their animals had had with a wild bear, noting how lucky their furry companion was to emerge from the interaction unscathed.

They wrote: “My malamute did that to the first black bear he ever saw in our yard about the age of 7 months. Nipped it right on the ass. That bear swung a paw around so fast I thought Titan was done for. Nope. Missed him by an inch, and that was the first and only time Titan chased a bear in his 13 years of life.”

Do Coyotes and Bears Usually Avoid Each Other?

While few would likely argue that messing with the Grizzly bear cub like this is a particularly wise life choice, or a common one, is it common to see bears and coyotes interact with each other like this?

Usually, coyotes like to avoid bears. After all, coyotes typically weigh anywhere from 25 to 45 pounds, while bears weigh anywhere from 200 to 800 pounds. Also, bears are apex predators, and coyotes are not.

If coyotes sense that bears are around, they will most likely seek out new territory to avoid crossing paths with them.
