Dry, chapped or cracked skin have you feeling the winter blues? Portable humidifiers can be an easy way to add moisture back into the air when low temperatures and low humidity have your skin feeling tight, irritated and red this winter. Humidifiers are commonly used to help relieve dry noses, throats, lips and skin, according to the EPA. Add indoor heating to the mix, and your humidity could be alarmingly low in your home.

When I lived in Florida, I hardly had any problems with low humidity - in fact, I was in dire need of a dehumidifier even in the fall and winter season. Now that I live in Georgia, however, my dry skin is out of control over the fall and winter seasons. Enter the LEVOIT ultrasonic humidifier, which has been purchased over 90,000 times in the past month according to the Amazon company page.

How Ultrasonic Humidifiers Work

Ultrasonic humidifiers create water vapor through high-frequency vibration, which will break up the water into a “cool mist” cloud of tiny droplets. There’s no evaporation or steam, so ultrasonic humidifiers can increase the risk of contaminating the air with bacteria and minerals if not kept properly clean.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive, quiet and energy efficient
  • Ideal for small spaces
  • Very quiet
  • Some will come with antibacterial filters

Cons:

  • More likely to disperse bacteria and minerals
  • Can “over humidify” a room

Cleaning Instructions

It’s most ideal to use distilled or filtered water instead of tap water, even with the pre-filter sponge in the Levoit humidifier. Using tap water can contain extra bacteria, grow mold, and leave behind traces of white dust on nearby furniture.

The instructions say you should plan to clean the humidifier at least once a week to prevent build ups, though the EPA suggests between three to five days. As for the sponge pre-filter, each month you’ll want to soak the sponge in distilled white vinegar and rinse in warm water to keep clean.

What The Reviewers Say

(Amazon)

“Works like a dream” says one reviewer, going on to mention, “After owning several others, this little humidifier works perfectly, easy to fill, not obnoxiously large and is silent. [I] don’t wake up to wet carpets or over humid conditions. I’m waking up refreshed without headaches and no spills or lugging large reservoirs to fill.”

Another reviewer, who is a Levoit air purifier user as well, said “I get frequent nosebleeds in the winter months due to the dry air, so a humidifier is a must for me during this season. I have only ever had a Vicks humidifier, which is fine for occasional use, but pretty frustrating when you need it every night. I love the small footprint of this one that allows me to keep it on a small table next to my bed. I like that it has an actual on/off switch instead of having to plug in or unplug constantly.” They go on to mention that the ability to adjust the amount and direction of the mist is a must-have feature.

One more said that clean up is a “breeze” with “no awkward corners that make you wonder if you’re harboring a small ecosystem of bacteria.”

For complaints, some found that it needed to be cleaned often (which can be a hassle), and others found that even with the max setting on, they felt like there was little change in humidity. Another cautioned that using tap water can stain the filter permanently. Others felt like there was a strong odor.
