Weather.com is forecasting record temperatures this summer, with some saying it could be one of the hottest seasons yet. Hotter-than-average summer temps are expected from the Rockies to the East Coast.

So before you get sweaty just thinking about the heat waves on the horizon, cool down this summer with these portable AC sales - some are lightning deals on Amazon, and may go fast, but we’ll be updating our list as we find new deals. Our goal is to source the highest rated portable air conditioners at a reasonable price.

What BTU measurement is best for portable air conditioners?

BTU, short for British Thermal Unit, is a unit of measurement for how much energy your air conditioner uses to remove heat from your home in an hour. The higher the BTU, the bigger the room size it can cool.

To start, calculate the square footage of the room by multiplying the room’s length by width (example 10 feet x 12 feet = 120 square feet). We’ve discussed this before in our beginner guides to air purifiers and dehumidifiers, in case you recognize this step.

This helpful breakout from Honeywell is a good gauge for the the BTU’s your AC should fall into depending on common room sizes:

  • 250-350 sq. ft. – 8,000 BTU
  • 350-450 sq. ft. – 10,000 BTU
  • 400-550 sq. ft. – 12,000 BTU
  • 550-700 sq. ft. – 14,000 BTU

Important: Buying too high of a BTU, and your portable air conditioner could cool too rapidly, turning off and on trying to control the temperature. But if you buy a BTU that is too low, the portable AC will use a lot more energy trying to keep the room cool.

One of the most popular brands when it comes to home appliances, BLACK+DECKER is currently hosting a variety of sales on Amazon - earlier this week, the 8,000 BTU portable air conditioner was on sale, and now it’s the 14,000 BTU air conditioners' turn.

The highest square footage it’ll realistically cover is between 400-500 square feet (because the new DOE BTU is actually 8,400) despite the company page stating 700 square feet, but this is still plenty powerful for a larger single room.

This BLACK+DECKER portable air conditioner has a three-in-one function, with air conditioning, dehumidifying and a fan. It weighs just under 60 pounds, so it’s fairly mobile with a little heft. It comes with a remote control and top-mounted control panel, a slide-out washable filter, auto water evaporation, and a 24-hour timer according to the company page. Customers seem pretty happy, with most saying it’s pretty easy to install, and the performance was within expectation. As one reviewer noted, it “cools fairly large rooms, [is] efficient, [and] easy set up but has some flaws.” Some complaints were around the window kit being a nuisance to try to fit, and the drain being so low it was hard to have any pan or hose connected for overflow.

Midea 12,000 BTU U-Shaped Window Air Conditioner
(Amazon)

I had window air conditioners for many years when I lived in an old Florida house, and the summers could be brutal (especially with windows that were definitely not leak-proof). This Midea 12,000 BTU window air conditioner is currently a best-seller on Amazon, with over 9,000 purchased in the past month. You can get it for just over $400 with the coupon.

The Midea company page claims to achieve over 35% energy savings compared to other traditional units, and says it was one of the first window ACs to obtain the Energy Star Most Efficient Certification.

It is Wi-Fi enabled and can be controlled using an app or voice commands. According to the reviewers, it comfortably cools a 500 square foot room, is pretty quiet and the app is user-friendly.

7. DIGIGOOD Portable Mini AC: Evaporative Mini Air Cooler

Price: $59.99, was $75 - 20% off at Amazon

Rating: 4.4-stars; 76 ratings

DIGIGOOD Portable Mini AC: Evaporative Mini Air Cooler
(Amazon)

Okay, this is definitely not in the same category as the other portable air conditioners, as this is actually an Evaporative Mini Air Cooler, which functions a little more like a humidifier than a refrigerant air conditioner. It cools by pulling in the room’s air with a fan, and if you add ice or cold water to the tank, it should absorb that cooler water and is vented back into the room.

If you live in very dry areas, you may want some of the added humidity that this will add to a room. Since its use is very straightforward, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to power, either. One reviewer said, “It’s perfect for small spaces, energy-efficient, and easy to use…Simply fill the tank with water, plug it in, and turn it on. The water tank lasts for several hours, depending on the fan speed, which is adjustable.
