Monsoon Fury: Himachal, Punjab, Delhi, UP, Rajasthan in for Heavy Rains This Week; Uttarakhand on Red Alert!

3-Day rainfall accumulation from Tuesday to Friday morning.
(TWC met team)

Tuesday, July 2: Last week's onset of the monsoon over parts of Northwest India has severe consequences in Delhi and Uttarakhand. In the national capital, heavy rainfall has unleashed chaos, flooding streets and tragically claiming 11 lives, including four children, in separate incidents. The situation was exacerbated by the malfunctioning of around 300 drain pumps, severely hampering efforts to manage the deluge.

Similarly, in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, heavy rain swelled up the usually dry Sukhi river, washing away numerous parked cars and flooding homes and major roads.

Monsoon forecast for Northwest India

Now, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the southwest monsoon's further advance into Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab over the next two to three days. Meanwhile, a trough extending from Punjab to Mizoram will bring widespread light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning over the region during the next five days.

Additionally, isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Himachal Pradesh on July 2, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh on July 2-3, and East Rajasthan from July 3-5.
