Weather Today (June 13): Heavy Rains to Batter Karnataka, Sikkim; Heatwave to Prevail Over Delhi, Jammu

H​ere's the weather forecast for the next few days:

Thursday (June 13)

  • Localised heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and adjoining Assam.
  • Widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely over Northeast India. Fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely over southwestern parts of the Southern Peninsula and Maharashtra.
  • Some heavy spells are expected along the Konkan coast.
  • Isolated to scattered rain and thunderstorms are likely over Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
  • Isolated to scattered rain/snow and thunderstorms are likely over Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
  • Maximum temperatures are likely to be above 45°C in some pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

  • Widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely over Northeast India, with some spells being heavy in western Assam and the adjoining Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Meghalaya.
  • Scattered rain and thunderstorms are likely over the Southern Peninsula, Maharashtra, and southern Odisha. Isolated rain and thunderstorms are possible in Bihar, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • Isolated rain or snow and thunderstorms are possible in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh.

Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and northwest Bay of Bengal during the next three days.

A cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Assam and neighbourhood and another over north Bangladesh and neighbourhood in lower tropospheric levels. Further, a trough runs from central parts of Bihar to Nagaland and another northsouth trough runs roughly along Long. 86°E to the north of Lat. 22°N in lower tropospheric levels. Strong southwesterly/southerly winds are prevailing from Bay of Bengal to northeastern States in lower tropospheric levels.

This will result in widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next seven days.

Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on June 13 and 17, and over Assam and Meghalaya on June 15 and 17. Additionally, isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph), may occur over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha over the next three days, and over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh over the next five days.

Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph), may batter Konkan and Goa during the next five days, and over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada during the next 24 hours.

Isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall is expected over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal during the next five days. Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Kerala and Mahe on June 16-17, North Interior Karnataka on June 13, South Interior Karnataka on June 13 and 17, Telangana on June 17, and Coastal Karnataka from June 13.

Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions could grip Uttar Pradesh during June 13-17 and over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand on June 13-14, with isolated heat wave conditions in these areas on June 15. Additionally, heat wave conditions are very likely in isolated to some pockets of Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi over the next five days. Northeast Madhya Pradesh and northwest Rajasthan are expected to experience heat wave conditions on June 13-14, while northeast Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, the Jammu Division, and Odisha are likely to experience these conditions on June 13.
