Weather Today (July 29): Very Heavy Rains to Lash Assam, Odisha, WB, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka

H​ere's the weather forecast for the next few days:

Monday (July 29)

  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms is likely over Assam, Odisha, West Bengal, Gujarat, coastal areas of Maharashtra and Karnataka. Isolated extremely heavy falls likely in some areas of Gujarat.
  • Fairly widespread to widespread rains with isolated thunderstorms expected over the rest of the Northeast India, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
  • Isolated to scattered showers with isolated lightning are forecast over Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep.
  • Isolated rain/snow is possible over Ladakh.
  • Temperatures of 40°C or more are forecast in some pockets of West Rajasthan.

Tuesday (July 30)

  • Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms are likely over coastal Karnataka.
  • Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated thunderstorms expected over the Northeast, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, interior Karnataka, Kerala and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
  • Isolated to scattered showers with isolated lightning are forecast over Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep.
  • Scattered rainfall/snowfall is possible over Ladakh.
  • Temperatures of 40°C or more are forecast in some pockets of West Rajasthan.

A cyclonic circulation is located over Chhattisgarh and its adjoining region. The system will continue to move westward before gradually weakening. A east-west shear zone is running along around 21° N. Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfalls with thunderstorms are very likely over Gujarat, Odisha and adjoining areas of West Bengal through Monday.

Besides, isolated extremely heavy rainfalls are forecast in some areas of Gujarat. These areas will witness 200 mm or more rainfall at least by Monday evening, with a risk of flooding, inundation in lowland places, river rises and landslides.

Further, an off-shore trough at mean sea level along South Gujarat to Kerala coast persists, producing localised heavy rains and thunderstorms in the coastal areas of Maharashtra and Karnataka though Tuesday at least. The trough's activity will ease Wednesday onward.

A moisture laden southerly winds from Bay of Bengal flow over the Northeast, bringing isolated heavy rain over Assam today.

Temperatures will run cooler than seasonal average over the Northwestern parts of India for the next several days whereas temperatures of 40°C are likely in some pockets of West Rajasthan through Tuesday.
