Delhi's Air Quality Nears 'Severe' Levels Just Days Before Diwali

As Diwali approaches, Delhi’s air quality has already plunged into the “very poor” range, with an AQI of 328 recorded on Monday morning. Key areas like Punjabi Bagh, Pusa, Sonia Vihar, Burari Crossing, Anand Vihar, and Ashok Vihar report AQI readings over 350. The Akshardham area saw a sharp increase from 261 to 357 within a day, signalling a dangerous threshold for residents’ health.

Despite a firecracker ban until January 1, SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research) forecasts continued poor air quality, aggravated by vehicle emissions, industrial activities, and seasonal stubble burning. Current meteorological conditions are limiting the dispersion of pollutants, trapping Delhiites in hazardous air.

Residents are strongly advised to limit outdoor activities and avoid prolonged physical exertion. SAFAR has issued health alerts, urging people to close windows, avoid burning candles or incense indoors, and to seek immediate medical care if symptoms like coughing, chest discomfort, wheezing, or fatigue arise. Sensitive groups are especially urged to keep medication on hand.

Experts caution that Diwali celebrations could push AQI levels past 400, which would invoke Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). This includes strict restrictions on construction activities, heavy-duty vehicles, and certain diesel and petrol vehicles across the Delhi-NCR region.

As winter progresses, the fight against pollution grows more challenging. While SAFAR's warnings prompt immediate action, Delhi remains poised for a continued struggle against deteriorating air quality.
