Heat Advisories Issued as Hot Temperatures Grip Midwest and Northeast June 16 to 18, 2018 (RECAP)

A dangerous heat wave seared the Midwest and Northeast June 16 to 18, 2018.

This sweltering heat had prompted heat advisories to be issued from the Midwest to the Northeast. An excessive heat warning had also been posted for the Davenport, Iowa, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, St. Louis, Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul areas.

Daily record highs were set in a few Midwest cities on Sunday, June 17, including Cleveland (94 degrees), Alpena, Michigan (96 degrees) and La Crosse, Wisconsin (98 degrees).

Record heat then moved into the Northeast on Monday, June 18, when daily record highs were set at Albany, New York (97 degrees – tie), Williamsport, Pennsylvania (97 degrees – tie), Allentown, Pennsylvania (95 degrees – tie), Washington's Dulles Airport (94 degrees – tie), Erie, Pennsylvania (92 degrees – tie) and Portland, Maine (91 degrees).

With the jet stream digging southward into the Pacific Northwest, a ridge of high pressure had set up over the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic, resulting in a widespread area of heat and humidity.

The combination of heat and humidity resulted in high heat index values, meaning it felt hotter than the air temperature indicated. For many locations, heat index values approached and topped 100 degrees.

Relief was anticipated by Tuesday, June 19, and into Wednesday, June 20. A cold front was expected to slide through the Midwest and Northeast, resulting in temperatures returning closer to average for mid-June.
