The coldest air of the season so far has roared southward toward the East Coast, resulting in dangerously cold wind chills on Monday.

Wind chill warnings and advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service from parts of the Great Lakes into the mid-Atlantic, upstate New York and New England. These alerts are issued when there is a danger of frostbite or hypothermia in short amounts of time.

Wind chills in the teens below zero were reported Monday morning in New York City, Boston and Philadelphia. Interior locations such as Buffalo, New York, and Burlington, Vermont, had wind chills in the 20s below zero.

Subzero wind chills have been reported as far south as Asheville, North Carolina.

Highs are likely to hold in the teens on Monday along the Interstate 95 corridor from Boston to New York City and Philadelphia. Temperatures will then begin to moderate into mid-week.

Although this arctic blast is expected to only last a day or two in most locations, it marks the beginning of what is expected to be a frigid end to January east of the Rockies.

NOAA's 6- to 10-day temperature outlook illustrates this by giving portions of the central and eastern states high to very high odds of below-average temperatures Jan. 26 - Jan. 30.

Forecast guidance is indicating that the next shot of bitter cold air may begin to plunge into the Midwest starting late this week.
