Holiday Travel Forecast Across US

Post-Christmas travel delays are possible from a cross-country storm tracking across the Midwest and East through the weekend.

More than 115 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more from their homes for the holiday period spanning Dec. 21 through Jan. 1, according to AAA. That's the highest travel volume for the end-of-year holiday season since AAA began tracking in 2000.

Possible Trouble Spots

1. Snow and blowing snow will continue in the Northern Plains, with road closures probable.

2. Rain and thunderstorms will spread into the Southeast, Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic states, with the potential for significant delays at major airport hubs. Rain, ice and snow may develop by Sunday night in parts of New England and upstate New York.

3. Rain showers with snow falling at lower elevations than typical are possible from Washington state to central California.

Likely No Delays

Southern California, the southern Rockies and Southern Plains are expected to have good weather for traveling.
