Summer 2025: Where Above-Average Won’t Last

Summer is expected to be a hot one in parts of the West but could be wet in the East, according to an outlook issued by The Weather Company and Atmospheric G2.

Temperatures Key Points

  • The most persistent above-average heat is expected in the Great Basin, northern Rockies and Northwest.
  • June may also be significantly hotter than usual in parts of the Plains and Southwest before the axis of above-average heat shifts northwest.
  • Parts of the Southeast may trend a tad cooler than average in July and August.

We have each of the monthly temperature outlook maps below from June through August. Each shows which areas will be hotter and cooler than what is typical for the month as a whole.

Rainfall Key Points

  • That and the expected heat could allow drought to either persist or expand in the Plains, according to NOAA's latest drought outlook.
  • Parts of the East could skew toward a wetter than usual summer, particularly the Southeast early in summer.
  • That wetter summer could alleviate ongoing drought conditions in the East, according to NOAA's outlook.
