The vernal equinox, or the official first day of spring, has come and gone. But does that mean the stubborn cold East, warm West pattern will finally break? For the week ahead, the answer to this question is "sort of". Many cities will be on a temperature roller coaster ride over the next five days, so keep your winter and spring wardrobe handy.

Up and Down Temperatures

A fresh blast of cold air has engulfed the Great Lakes and Northeast to start the week. This shivering air mass will linger in the East through Tuesday morning. After that, temperatures will climb above average midweek, and then plummet once again as we head into the weekend.

Monday-Tuesday: Below-average temperatures continue in the East and Great Lakes. Highs will range from the 20s in northern New England to the 40s in the Mid-Atlantic. The Great Lakes and Upper Midwest will see highs in the 30s and 40s. On Tuesday morning, lows in the teens and 20s will be widespread throughout the Northeast.

(CITIES: New York | Boston)

Wednesday-Thursday: Highs rise to near average on Wednesday, and then climb above average on Thursday. Portions of the Mid-Atlantic may see temperatures in the 60s and 70s on Thursday. Highs in the 60s are possible in the New York City metro area as well. In parts of New England, including Boston, highs may reach the 50s. Unfortunately, rain and cloud cover will accompany the milder temperatures.

(CITIES: Washington | Philadelphia)

Friday-Saturday: The midweek warmth won't stick around for long, as another dip in the jet stream arrives to end the week, sending temperatures below average once again. Most areas in the East will see high temperatures 10-20 degrees below average on Saturday.

(CITIES: Pittsburgh | Syracuse)
