A pattern change this week will bring an end to the heat and humidity as an extended stretch of fall temperatures will develop in much of the central and eastern United States.

Before the pattern change this week, a cold front that has already moved through the Plains and the Northeast will bring a brief taste of fall this weekend. Some spots in the interior Northeast will even feel cold on Sunday morning compared to the above-average warmth of late. However, warmer-than-average temperatures and humid conditions will hold on in the South.

Early this week, another low-pressure system will develop in the northern Rockies and Plains. Ahead of this system, temperatures will increase once again.

Upper-level pattern will allow cooler temperatures to slide southward next week.

Behind this system as an upper-level trough or southward dip in the jet stream pushes eastward, cooler conditions will arrive and will last for an extended period of time.

Cooler Conditions Spread Into Central U.S.

The cold front will push eastward through the Rockies, Plains and Midwest by midweek. Behind this system, a northerly flow will allow temperatures to drop. The humid feel to the air will be erased as dew points in the 60s and 70s will be replaced with refreshing dew points in the 40s.

Below-average temperatures will expand into the northern and central Plains by Tuesday and will continue spreading south and eastward through Thursday. Highs will be 5 to 15 degrees cooler than average for much of the central U.S.

Forecast Highs

High temperatures will climb only into the 50s in the northern Plains and upper Mississippi Valley while much of the Midwest and central Plains will see highs in the 60s.

As far south as northern Texas will see temperatures top out only in the 70s by midweek.

Low temperatures will also be colder compared to recent conditions.

Forecast Lows

Instead of lows in the 50s and 60s, temperatures will dip into the 30s and 40s for much of the upper Midwest and the northern and central Plains. Temperatures in the 30s will result in frost developing in some locations, as well.

Low temperatures will even fall into the 50s for parts of the southern Plains, with 60s and 70s toward the Gulf Coast.

Fall Temperatures Spread East

The ridge of high pressure that has dominated the Southeast recently will slow down the eastward push of the cold front late this week.

However, by late this week, the East will see cooler temperatures, with highs and lows closer to average for late September.

Next Week's Forecast

High temperatures will be in the 60s and 70s for much of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic by late this week, with 70s and 80s for much of the South. Even Florida will see highs in the 90s give way to 80s by the beginning of October.

Low temperatures there will also be cooler by next weekend. The Northeast and mid-Atlantic can expect lows in the 40s and 50s.

Dew points will also lower some, which will make it feel more comfortable.

The cooler temperatures, especially overnight, and the lower humidity will help the fall foliage as the recent warmth has delayed the foliage in the Northeast.
