Winter Storm Carter hammered parts of the Plains with heavy snow and strong winds, then blanketed the upper Midwest, northern Great Lakes and northern New England with snow, sleet and freezing rain, leading to travel headaches during the first weekend of December.

Up to 16 inches of snow was measured near Burke, South Dakota. Totals in excess of 6 inches were received from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, western Wisconsin, southern Minnesota, western Iowa, northern and western Nebraska, southern and western South Dakota and parts of Wyoming.



A few mountain locations, such as the Tetons of western Wyoming and the high country of western Colorado, picked up over a foot of snow from Winter Storm Carter.

Two to 5 inches of snow was measured in the Twin Cities metro area while 4 to 6 inches was reported in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Seidel reported 3 inches of snow fell in just 3 hours overnight Dec. 1 into Dec. 2 in Omaha. Up to 9 inches was reported across the Missouri River in Council Bluffs, Iowa.



Snow fell at the rate of 1.5 inches per hour early Dec. 2 at the National Weather Service office near the northern Michigan town of Gaylord.

There was a brief round of freezing rain on the night of Dec. 1 into the morning of Dec. 2 in the Adirondacks and Catskills of New York and in parts of Vermont and New Hampshire. In the interior Northeast, snow was mostly confined to northern Maine on Dec. 2.

This system brought feet of snow to California's Sierra Nevada Nov. 29-30, including 53 inches of fresh snow at Mammoth Mountain.

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon received 10 inches of snowfall while the National Weather Service office near Flagstaff, Arizona, reported 6.5 inches early Nov. 30.

Kansas: 4 inches in Dresden
Maine: 3.5 inches near Fort Kent; 2 inches near Caribou
Michigan: 10 inches near Negaunee
Minnesota: 12 inches in St. James; 8 inches in Mankato; 2.8 inches at Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport
Montana: 6.6 inches near Opheim; 6 inches near Great Falls
Nebraska: 14 inches near Valentine, Mullen and Seneca; 7 inches near North Platte; 4 inches at Omaha (Eppley Airfield)
Nevada: 20 inches at Mount Rose Ski Resort
New Hampshire: 1.5 inches near Madison
New Mexico: 9 inches near Toadlena
North Dakota: 0.25 inches of ice in Killdeer
South Dakota: 16 inches near Burke; 8 inches in Yankton
