Wind Gusts Over 70 MPH Leave Damage in New York City, Northeast as Powerful Storm Sweeps Through Great Lakes

A powerful storm moving across the Great Lakes on Monday blasted the Northeast with high winds that left damage in parts of the region.

Trees and power lines were downed in parts of the New York City tri-state area as wind gusts topped 50 mph in some spots on Monday. This included Teaneck, New Jersey, in Bergen County, where a large tree was blown down onto a home and vehicle, the National Weather Service said. Downed trees and power lines were also reported in the Queens neighborhood of Astoria, New York.

About noon Monday, an 82-mph gust was clocked at Island Beach State Park, New Jersey, and a gust to 73 mph was recorded in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Late Monday morning, a wind gust of 79 mph was reported in Indian Beach, Delaware, while Cape May, New Jersey, gusted to 72 mph.

Damage from these high winds was reported on the boardwalk in Cape May and Wildwood, New Jersey. A roof blown off a hotel in Cape May was seen lying on the ground.

Photos shared on social media also showed damage in other parts of the Jersey Shore. A gas station canopy was knocked down in Egg Harbor Township, and a marina was damaged in Somers Point, across the bridge from Ocean City, New Jersey.

Portions of Route 9 in Ocean and Cape May counties in coastal New Jersey were closed Monday afternoon due to downed power lines on the road.

Downed trees and power lines also forced the closures of various roads in Connecticut Monday afternoon, including parts of routes 434 and 17 in Middlesex County, Route 100 in New Haven County and Route 107 in Fairfield County. Wind gusts over 60 mph were reported.

In Philadelphia, wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph were causing a large crane to sway high in the air Monday afternoon.

Drive-thru coronavirus testing sites were shut down on Monday in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut because of the high winds, the New York Times reported. The New York Health Department closed all 10 of its drive-thru testing sites on Monday, but they were expected to reopen on Tuesday.

Multiple drive-thru testing sites were closed Monday in New Jersey, NJ.com reported. At least seven sites had been shut down in Connecticut, according to WTNH-TV.

More than 370,000 customers were without power from Virginia to New York and Massachusetts as of Monday evening, according to PowerOutage.us. Nearly 130,000 of those were in Massachusetts alone.

The high winds were associated with the same weather system that spawned destructive severe storms and tornadoes in the South Sunday into Monday.
