The Masters Weather Forecast May Finally Be Less Eventful For The First Time In Four Years

Following a rough weather start for a practice round Monday, and a few showers around Friday, the rest of the tournament's weather looks picture perfect.

Temperature's Tee-to-Green Impact

The Masters Tournament weather may have fewer headaches for both golfers and fans to deal with compared to the last several years.

After rain washed out Monday's practice round, the 89th edition of professional golf's first major tournament of the year is underway. The final round will wrap up Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club.

The Forecast

- Rain: The tournament avoided its biggest rain threat Thursday night. While there were pop-up showers around the Southeast Friday, most of them avoided Augusta. The rest of the weekend looks dry.

- Temperatures: In this pattern, we won't have to worry about heat. Expect chilly mornings with lows in the 50s. Otherwise, expect pleasant daytime highs and low humidity.

- Winds: After Friday's breezes, we don't expect winds to be a significant issue for the rest of the tournament.

Recent Weather Issues

This forecast is a welcomed sight given the headaches Mother Nature has thrown at the tournament over the past few years.

Last year, rain delayed the first round by 2 hours. Then, wind gusts up to 43 mph blew sand out of some bunkers, forcing golfers, caddies and fans to shield their faces from the blowing sand. Those nagging winds would linger through the weekend.

2023's tournament started with beautiful weather. But then Friday and Saturday's rounds were suspended several times as over 2 inches of rain drenched the city over that two-day period. If that wasn't enough, three large trees fell around the 17th-hole tee box that Friday just as a weather delay was announced. Fortunately, it dried out by Sunday to allow the tournament to wrap up on time.

In 2022, severe thunderstorms rumbled over or near Augusta for a practice round Tuesday and forced the anticipated Par 3 contest to end early on Wednesday. Lingering rain pushed back tee times for Thursday's opening round by 30 minutes as well.

Masters Weather History

Since 1934, only about one-third of all years had a four-day stretch of either no rain or just a trace of rain during the Masters, according to data compiled by William Schmitz of the Southeast Regional Climate Center. The last time this happened was in 2017.

That's proof that spring weather in the Southeast isn't just blooming azaleas and sunny skies.

Only five Masters tournaments were so weather delayed they had to finish on a Monday. That hasn't happened since 1983.

Here are some other weather extremes during the tournament, according to the SERCC:

-Hottest day: 92 degrees on Friday, April 7, 1967

-Coldest morning: 26 degrees on Sunday, April 8, 2007

-Wettest day: 2.67 inches of rain on Saturday, April 7, 1973

-Wettest tournament: 3.23 inches of rain fell in 1936
