A one-mile radius of a New York City suburb has been placed on lockdown as a "containment zone" as it has become the largest cluster of Coronavirus in the nation, according to The New York Times.

On Tuesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the National Guard was deploying to a section of New Rochelle, New York, where schools, places of worship and community centers are to close and large indoor gatherings are now banned in an effort to halt the spread of the deadly virus.

Photos of the town show near empty streets, but grocery stores are still open, and residents who are not quarantined are permitted to go about their days quite normally, except for avoiding school and large gatherings. Cuomo said that his intention is "containing facilities" where the disease is likely to spread.

The decision is similar to actions taken in Italy and parts of China, where coronavirus has hit hardest. Containment efforts seem to have been successful in China according to recent transmission numbers.

The number of cases in the U.S. topped 1,000 on Wednesday, and the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told a U.S. House committee Wednesday morning that the outbreak will continue to spread.
