As of Thursday, 41 people in the U.S. have died from the coronavirus.

The NBA and NHL suspended its seasons indefinitely, the Boston Marathon has been postponed, the MLB is suspending its spring training, and Disney closed its U.S. parks, Disneyland Paris and suspended its cruise line departures all in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The White House announced a boost COVID-19 testing in the U.S. on Friday, providing $1.3 million in funding to two companies working to develop rapid tests for the illness. The decision came as the global pandemic spreads throughout the U.S., shuttering schools, closing Broadway shows, and forcing the cancellation of large-scale events.

President Trump announced Wednesday night that effective Friday, all travel from Europe to the U.S. would be banned for 30 days in an attempt to halt the spread of the disease. He also said that domestic travel restrictions are possible.

As of Friday morning, the U.S. reported 41 total deaths from the coronavirus. The total of cases reported throughout the country topped 1,700, according to Johns Hopkins coronavirus dashboard.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo deployed the National Guard to New Rochelle, a New York City suburb that has become a hotspot for the virus. The plan is to create a one-mile radius "containment zone" in an attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Schools, churches and synagogues in the area will be closed, and large indoor gatherings banned, The New York Times reported.

Of the 41 deaths, 31 occurred in Washington state, two were reported in Florida, and one each in Georgia, New Jersey, South Dakota and Kansas. Four died in California.

Globally, at least 136,860 people have been infected as of Friday, with at least 5,089 total deaths.

Italy, which has experienced large-scale shutdowns and an national emergency due to the illness, South Korea and Iran have seen the largest outbreaks for COVID-19 after China.

The outbreak is already affecting the economy, with international stock markets plummeting and global oil prices seeing their worst losses in nearly 30 years.

Sylvie Briand, the head of WHO's Global Infections Hazard Preparedness division said that those infected with the coronavirus may not show symptoms immediately. The incubation period is about 10 to 14 days, meaning that people who have contracted the disease could easily spread it before they show symptoms.
