Eczema, a common skin condition affecting millions of Americans, is often misunderstood when it comes to whether it’s contagious or not. Atopic dermatitis, the most prevalent form of eczema, most often presents as dry or itchy patches of skin. However, contrary to popular belief, eczema isn’t contagious; it can’t be caught from another person or spread through contact.

Clearing Up Confusion

The misconception of eczema being contagious likely arises from its association with other infections that can occur among eczema patients. When individuals with eczema scratch their skin, it can lead to skin damage, creating openings for bacteria, viruses and fungi to enter.

This often causes secondary infections that are very much contagious, like Streptococcus (the bacteria that causes Strep throat) or Staphylococcus (Staph infections). Those with eczema may also be more susceptible to serious viral infections.

When experiencing symptoms of these infections alongside eczema, precautions should be taken to prevent spreading, particularly in shared spaces like swimming pools.

Protective measures include covering infected areas with waterproof bandages or clothing, not sharing personal items like towels or goggles, and ensuring proper hygiene.

You Can Get It From Your Parents

Despite the genetic component of eczema, where one can inherit the condition from parents, it remains non-communicable. Eczema always originates from within one's own genetic makeup and can’t be transmitted like a contagious disease.

While eczema itself isn’t contagious, people with the condition should be mindful of potential secondary infections and take appropriate precautions to prevent spreading infections to others. Understanding the facts about eczema can help dispel harmful myths and promote informed skin care practices.
