Sun damage is the biggest threat to our skin's health, according to licensed aesthetician and laser specialist Erin Blackwell. "Across the board, sun damage is the number one concern. People don’t like their spots as they’re aging, they don’t like to see the different skin tone change," Blackwell explained, adding that while lifestyle choices like diet, smoking and drinking also affect skin health, the sun's impact is constant and begins at a young age.

Spotting Sun Damage

Identifying sun damage can help in taking early action. "Sun spots, spots with textures, actinic keratosis, seborrheic keratosis, these little keratoses on the skin are something that, as we age, we don’t really like when we look in the mirror," Blackwell said. Fortunately, these conditions can be treated and maintained with proper care.

Preventive Measures

Blackwell emphasizes the importance of prevention to combat sun damage. "Wear sunscreen, wear hats, protect your skin," she advised. Being mindful of your environment and activities is crucial. "If you’re at a baseball game, wear a hat, reapply your sunscreen every two hours. If you’re at the beach, use a physical block sunscreen that is water-resistant," she suggests. "Just being aware of even those little simple things are wonderful ways to protect your skin."

Daily Skincare Routine

For regular, day-to-day treatment of sun damage, Blackwell recommends a simple skincare regimen. "I think that skin care is very important, having just a very basic regimen. You don’t have to have 20 products and be a skincare junkie, unless you really want to." Blackwell lists a vitamin C serum and a vitamin A retinol or retin-A as skin health necessities to combat the signs of sun damage. Cleansing your face morning and night and using these basic products can protect your skin, prevent aging and give it a healthy glow.

By taking these steps, everyone can protect their skin from the sun’s damaging effects and maintain a youthful, healthy appearance.
