A Montana driver was startled when a herd of bison swarmed her car as she drove through snowy Yellowstone National Park in early January.

Cindy Shaffer stopped her vehicle once she noticed the bison on the road. The bison, however, didn’t stop. Shaffer was quick to film the incident.

“Oh my God, my heart is racing,” she can be heard saying in the video, which she recorded on Jan. 10. Shaffer, who regularly films footage in Yellowstone, said it was what she always dreamed of seeing in the park.

Shaffer was both thrilled and understandably anxious. She said that it was “pretty cool, but a little scary.”

Yellowstone National Park is home to about 4,500 bison. It isn’t uncommon for them to be seen along roads within the park, often holding up traffic.

Visitors are warned to never approach wildlife within the park, and that the safest and best views are often from within your vehicle.
