Winter Storm Sage: Evening Commute Will Be Tricky; Nor'easter Knocks Out Power To Tens Of Thousands

W​inter Storm Sage is dumping heavy snow on parts of the Northeast, which is having serious travel impacts and knocking out power to tens of thousands.

(​4:44 p.m. ET) Semis Jackknife On I-95

S​torm chaser Brandon Copic tweets that five semitractor trailers have jackknifed on Interstate 95 at the Maine-New Hampshire state line.

(​4:30 p.m. ET) Flight Cancellations Top 1,000

M​ore than 1,000 flights have already been canceled Tuesday, according to flight tracker flightaware.com. Nearly 300 of those are to and from Boston's Logan International. New York's Laguardia International has seen at least 300 cancellations and Newark Liberty International Airport saw 146. More than 3,900 flights were delayed.

(​3:37 p.m. ET) Evening Commutes Will Be Difficult

For the afternoon/evening commute, expect slippery roads on the west and north sides of the Boston metro, where it has already been snowing. In the rest of the metro area, expect rain to steadily change over to wet snow from northwest to southeast through the afternoon drive, with a little slushy accumulations possible on some roads, particularly side streets.

For the hardest-hit areas of interior New England and eastern New York, the snow and wind will continue, making travel difficult and leading to additional tree damage and power outages.

In the New York City tri-state, light snow and wind will continue through the afternoon rush, with some slushy additional accumulations possible on Long Island.

(​3:32 p.m. ET) Whiteout Conditions In New Hampshire

T​he New Hampshire State Police warn that snow is continuing to make driving difficult. The agency said whiteout conditions were happening on State Highway 101 near Stratham. Between 5 a.m. and noon Tuesday, the agency said, there were more than 120 crashes and vehicles off the road.

(​3:01 p.m. ET) Downed Power Lines Temporarily Close Interstate

Interstate 93 was temporarily closed in both directions in Londonderry, New Hampshire, after electrical wires fell into the roadway, the New Hampshire State Police said. The interstate reopened about 2 p.m. after utility crews removed the wires.

(2:53 p.m. ET) Power Outages Near 300,000

T​he number of homes and businesses without power has jumped to more than 284,000, according to poweroutage.us. New York and New Hampshire had the majority of the outages, with over 85,000 and 75,000, respectively. More than 68,000 customers in Massachusetts are without power.

(1:10 p.m. ET) The Top Snow Totals At This Hour

H​ere's a look at the top snow totals from this nor'easter over the past 24 hours, according to the National Weather Service:

-​Wilmington, Vermont: 28 inches

-​Windsor, Massachusetts: 28 inches

-​Rowe, Massachusetts: 27 inches

-​Near Plainfield, Massachusetts: 26 inches

-Near Readsboro, Vermont: 24.5 inches

-Newfane, Vermont: 24 inches

-​Savoy, Massachusetts: 24 inches

(​12:36 p.m. ET) Mall Roof Collapses Under Snow

A​ roof at the Miller Hill Mall in Duluth, Minnesota, collapsed about 9 a.m. CDT Tuesday morning, according to WCCO.

No injuries were immediately reported in the roof collapse, according to the Duluth Fire Department. The mall, built about 50 years ago, was evacuated. Read more about the roof collapse here.

(​12:23 p.m. ET) Tree Damages Home's Roof

A​ tree laden with heavy, wet snow crashed through the roof of a house in Southwick, Massachusetts, on Thursday morning. The owner of the house told WWLP the tree caused considerable damage.

(​12:15 p.m. ET) Numberous Roads Closed In Western Massachusetts

D​ozens of roads are closed by downed trees and fallen power lines in western Massachusetts, including in Hadley, Whately, Shelbourne, Dalton, Greenfield and Northampton, according to WWLP.

(​11:50 a.m. ET) Flight Cancellations Still Growing

M​ore than 850 flights have already been canceled this morning, according to flight tracker flightaware.com. More than 270 of those are to and from Boston's Logan International. More than 225 are at New York's Laguardia International and another 127 at Newark Liberty International Airport.

(​10:40 a.m. ET) State Of Emergency In 5 New Jersey Counties

N​ew Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency in five counties: Warren, Sussex, Morris, Passaic and Bergen.

(​10:17 a.m. ET) Accidents On New Hampshire Roads

T​he New Hampshire State Police said troopers have responded to more than 60 weather-related calls for service since 5 a.m. today. They include vehicle crashes and vehicles sliding off the road.

(9:28 a.m. ET) Over A Quarter Million Without Power

T​he number of homes and businesses without power has jumped to more than 225,000, according to poweroutage.us. New York and Massachusetts had the majority of the outages, with over 95,000 and 60,000, respectively.

(​9:16 a.m. ET) Towns Postpone Elections Because Of Storm

T​he nor'easter has led about 70 towns in New Hampshire to postpone elections that had been scheduled for today. The Secretary of State's office has a list of the towns.

(​8:41 a.m. ET) Flight Cancellations Begin To Stack Up

M​ore than 480 flights have already been canceled this morning, according to flight tracker flightaware.com. More than 150 of those are to and from Boston's Logan International. More than 90 are at New York's Laguardia International and another 80 at Newark Liberty International Airport.

(​8:23 a.m. ET) Delta Flight Rolls Off Taxiway

D​elta Flight 1718 from Syracuse to Laguardia "exited" a taxiway about 7:30 a.m., airport officials said in a news release. Passengers were being taken off the Airbus A220-100 to return to the terminal.

T​he incident did not affect airport operations, according to the news release.

The plane was reported to be nose down in the grass off the tarmac, according to syracuse.com. The plane had 61 passengers, according to the site.

(​8:16 a.m. ET) Travel Bans In New York State

Road conditions are deteriorating in the Hudson Valley and Capital Region, according to the New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services. Schenectady, Dutchess, Ulster and Hamilton counties have issued travel bans.

(​8:14 a.m. ET) State Of Emergency In New York

N​ew York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency Monday night in advance of the nor'easter. Officials were asking people to stay off the roads.

“This could be deadly,” Hochul warned at a storm briefing. “Let me repeat: This will be a dangerous storm. Please stay off the roads for your own safety.”

T​he number of homes and businesses without power is nearly 160,000, according to poweroutage.us. New York and Massachusetts had the majority of the outages, with over 72,000 and 40,000, respectively.
