Cyclones Marcia and Lam Batter Australian Coast; Homes Destroyed, Power Out For Thousands

Two large cyclones have rushed ashore in northern Australia, leaving behind a large swath of damage.

Tropical cyclones Lam and Marcia pounded the country's Northern Territory and Queensland states, respectively, according to News Australia. Both tropical systems were packing sustained winds well over 100 mph when they impacted the coast.

"Northwest Australia has the most frequent encounters with tropical cyclones, averaging about two landfalls each season," said weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce.

The storms have left homes destroyed, trees toppled and many homes without power, the French Press Agency reported. There have been no deaths reported, officials said in the report.

Marcia made landfall first, near the town of Rockhampton, as a Category 5 cyclone on the scale used to categorize South Pacific typhoons, News Australia said. Lam made landfall shortly after as a Category 4 cyclone. Both weakened rapidly after landfall.

Late Friday night, News Australia also reported that locals in Jambin have been asked to evacuate due to an automatic water release in an upstream dam. Officials were quick to note that the dam had not been breached, however, in response to some false reports.

Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she and other officials would tour the damaged areas from the air using military helicopters as soon as it was safe, the French Press Agency also reported. In Rockhampton alone, there were at least 268 reports of structural damage, the report added.

Before the storms arrived, Cyclone Lam forced the evacuation of Warruwi, a small town on Goulburn Island, News Australia also reported. The town's 430 residents were moved to the mainland.

Queenslanders spent the hours before Marcia's landfall clearing store shelves of supplies as they stocked up in preparation for the storm, Reuters reported. The state's biggest port, the Port of Gladstone, has stopped ship-loading operations and moved all ships away from the harbor, the report said.

It might be rare for two cyclones to make landfall at virtually the same time, but it's not uncommon for tropical systems to impact Australia.

The season typically runs from November to April in the Southern Hemisphere.
