January 2015 started off with Winter Storm Gorgon, a 2,000 mile swath of winter weather that raced all the way across the U.S. from Washington State to the New Jersey coastline. Dangerously cold temperatures followed on the storm's tail, causing school closures in Washington, D.C. and subzero temperatures throughout the midwest.

Winter weather continued through to mid-March with Winter Storm Ultima, which brought snow to the Northeast on the first day of spring. As spring turned into summer, Texas was ravaged with major floods over and over again.

The collection above features some of the most compelling images of 2015, from natural disasters, to travel photos and science snapshots. It's a series of photos that showcase the most arresting images of weather and the natural world from the past year, including shots of the night sky, swamp buggy races in Southern Florida and even a surfer who lit himself on fire.
