NYC Clears Snow-Clogged Streets With Hot Tubs

February 9, 2026

With temperatures stubbornly remaining below freezing for long stretches, New York City has turned to the Trecan Combustion 60-PD Snowmelter, known on the streets as the “hot tub.” These orange behemoths can melt 120 tons of snow an hour. Javier Lojan, acting sanitation commissioner, told The Weather Channel’s Stephanie Abrams the city has 13 of the machines operating around the city’s five boroughs. Lojan said it may take another couple of weeks before all the piles of snow are cleared.
