T​he Westminster Dog Show concluded Tuesday night with a petit basset griffon Vendéen named for the late rock ‘n’ roll legend Buddy Holly declared Best in Show.

Buddy Holly's win was a first for the rabbit-hunting breed.

“I never thought a PBGV would do this,” handler and co-owner Janice Hayes said. “Buddy Holly is the epitome of a show dog. Nothing bothers him.”

This was the 147th Westminster Dog Show, making it the second-longest-running sporting event in the U.S., second only to the Kentucky Derby, which took place this past weekend.

O​ne of the favorites of this year's competition was Winston, a French bulldog, which recently became the United States' favorite dog breed. Winston is the 2023 winner in the non-sporting category and the winner for his breed, and was a runner-up for the grand prize in the 2022 competition, notable because a French bulldog has never won best in show at the Westminster Dog Show.

This year's event was held at the Arthur Ashe Stadium within the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens, New York. In the past, the dog show had been held at Manhattan's Madison Square Garden, but was moved to Tarrytown, New York, for the last two years so that the event could be held outside for COVID-19 safety, The Associated Press reported. This year's venue boasted a retractable roof, giving the best of both worlds — the ability for events hosted within its walls to become indoor or outdoor events. The roof remained closed Monday, though temperatures reached the 70s during the day while dipping back into the low 60s during the evening.
