Long Island Snowplow Driver Rescues Two Dogs During Blizzard

As a historic nor'easter hit, two dogs were running along a highway in blizzard conditions. Here's how they were rescued from the storm.

A snowplow driver on New York’s Long Island is being hailed for his kindness after safely rescuing two dogs that he saw running down a local highway during last week’s historic nor’easter.

Kenny McGowan was out plowing roads in the Town of Babylon when the local Department of Public Works employee observed the two cold canines.

“Someone is going to hit them,” McGowan later recalled thinking. As fast-falling snow created blizzard conditions, he followed the dogs a mile down the road until he found a spot where he was able to position his truck to safely block highway traffic. McGowan called a fellow DPW worker who was able to bring a leash to help assist with the rescue.

With the help of several good Samaritans who pulled over to help, the dogs were eventually corralled and transferred to a DPW truck. According to a local government statement on social media, those who assisted included “a Petro oil truck driver with a rope to secure the dogs and a mother and daughter who wrapped a blanket around the dogs.”

“It could have been a tragedy,” McGowan said. “The number of people who stopped to help, it shows that people do care.”

The story has a happy ending: The dogs were taken to a local animal shelter, and employees were able to reunite them with their grateful owners.
