A frightened dog who swam into a drainage basin off Lake Erie was safely rescued this week thanks to quick thinking from Cleveland Fire Department and Animal Care & Control officers.

The dog had ventured into the water drainage area but became too scared to swim back out on her own, prompting concerned residents to call for help. Cleveland Fire Department responded rapidly to assist animal control officers with the water rescue.

The key to coaxing the nervous pup to safety? Beef-flavored dog treats. "With a little help from some canine carry-outs (beef flavor did the trick!), they were able to safely coax her out, get her harnessed, and lift her to safety," Cleveland Animal Care & Control shared on social media.

The rescue had an even happier ending when officers discovered the dog was microchipped. Within minutes, they contacted her relieved owner, who had been frantically searching the area.

"Because of teamwork between departments, and a lot of patience and care, this story had the best possible ending—a very happy reunion," animal control officials said.
