A weekend hiking trip in Tennessee's Cherokee National Forest became a dramatic rescue mission after a lost hiker and his dog spent a frigid night trapped in a ravine with only shorts and a T-shirt for protection. With overnight temperatures plummeting into the 40s, the man became hypothermic during his nearly 24-hour ordeal in the Sampson Mountain Wilderness.

Local search and rescue teams located the stranded hiker and his German shepherd, but quickly realized the terrain made a ground evacuation too risky. That's when they called in for reinforcements. The Tennessee National Guard sent a Blackhawk helicopter and a five-person crew to assist in the technically complex rescue.

The most heartwarming detail? The flight paramedic didn't just focus on the human victim. Instead, he crafted a special harness from aircraft webbing to safely lift the hiker's faithful companion Jack to safety as well. Both hiker and dog were successfully extracted and declared stable after receiving medical attention.
