More than a million homes and businesses were in the dark as the week began because of a strong coastal storm that buffeted New England with strong winds and dumped heavy rainfall that triggered flooding.

Officials said some residents may be in the dark for days as they work to restore widespread outages, and the storms also closed hundreds of schools across the region Monday.

The system brought coastal flooding as it piled up waves along the shoreline, and inland waterways were also flooded. Some roads had to be closed down because of standing water. No deaths have been reported from these storms.
