The deep freeze that has gripped much of North America has turned Niagara Falls into a frosty winter wonderland. The mist from the surging falls has frozen over, covering the surrounding area in icicles and a pure white coat.

More than 3,000 tons of water flows over the falls every second, and with wind chills in the area falling as low as 14 degrees below zero within the last week, the mist freezes instantly on the rocks and walkways near the famous waterfall. The stunning scene draws tourists to Niagara Falls during a time when tourism would otherwise be low in numbers due to the cold.

"It's outstanding. As cold as it gets, it's a year-round attraction," visitor Paul Tabaczynski told New York Upstate on Tuesday

While the landscape is covered in a layer of white, the falls themselves, stretching between New York and Canada, continue to flow, unfrozen. Kristin Amico, who visited the falls on Tuesday as well, described it as a "slushy current braking to a lumbering flow," as the water struggled to find a path through the ice.

"It even sounds duller and less thundrous than in summer months," she wrote in her piece for Independent.

It's a mystifying sight, but for those who would rather not venture out into the frigid temperatures, click through the slideshow above.
