It seems impossible that Versailles could get any more gorgeous, but this week's snowfall turned the French palace into a winter wonderland. The majestically white grounds of the royal chateau, 12 miles outside of Paris, are reminiscent of a fairytale. But despite Versailles' snowy beauty, Paris and surrounding municipalities are experiencing what has been described as "traffic chaos" brought on by the snowstorm.

The Paris region of France experienced its first real dose of winter weather this season as more than 4 inches of snow fell Tuesday through Wednesday, coating the capital and metro areas in a thick blanket of white. The snowfall and freezing temperatures caused a record number of traffic jams throughout the Paris region on Tuesday night, The Local reports. Drivers were warned to stay off the roads until midday Wednesday, and bus service has been suspended. Some tram and commuter rail lines were shut down as well.

The Guardian reported that the city closed the Eiffel Tower for the second day in a row on Wednesday as the snow continued. 28 departments are on alert across the country until late Wednesday, according to France24.
