Powerful storms hit the South this weekend, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens more.

At least 17 confirmed tornadoes tore through Mississippi, Alabama and Texas, and a possible tornado struck Ohio as the storm moved northeast-ward later into the weekend. The dangerous storms left behind piles of debris, tore down trees and powerlines and destroyed homes and businesses.

The fatalities include two children, who were killed Saturday near Pollock in East Texas when a tree fell on the vehicle they were riding in during a severe storm. There were two other confirmed deaths in Texas due to severe weather, and two people were killed in Louisiana. One was killed in Alabama and one person was killed in Mississippi as tornadoes and severe storms gripped the states.

As the storms moved east, more than 200,000 homes and businesses were left without power on Monday morning up the coast from North Carolina and through the Mid-Atlantic and from Ohio to Rhode Island, poweroutage.us reported.

Philadelphia was issued a rare tornado warning around 3:30 a.m. Monday, however no tornadoes were reported. Philadelphia Magazine reported uprooted trees, damaged roofs and power outages throughout the city Monday morning.
