Mid-May usually brings visions of jacket-less picnics, flowers in bloom and hot summer days quickly approaching. But in Turkey's eastern Mus province, some roads are just being cleared of snow after a six month closure.

Using heavy machinery, workers cleared several feet of snow on Wednesday from Cavustepe road. Photos show that the snow towered high above the equipment used to plow the roadway.

weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce said that they may not bother to plow the mountainous roads during the winter, waiting instead for a big plow as the spring thaw approaches. Other parts of Europe handle snow removal this way as well.

"This is similar to what happens in springtime in parts of the Rockies," Dolce said.

Mus province is located in Turkey's Eastern Anatolia region, which is known for its high elevation and severe climate. It isn't uncommon for roads in the province to be blocked with snow for months during the harsh winters.
